About Cartier
Cartier was founded in Paris in 1847 by Louis-François Cartier as a goldsmith’s workshop, and in 1859 it opened a jewellery shop on the Boulevard des Italiens (Treccani). Early in the twentieth century it opened branches in London, New York and other cities (Treccani). Several of its best known jewels came from the Italian-born designer Aldo Cipullo, who worked for the house from 1969 to 1974 (Cincinnati Art Museum). His first design was the Love bracelet, sold with a small screwdriver so that a couple could fasten it on each other’s wrists. His Juste un Clou line drew on a bent nail; the museum dates one of its pins to 1971, and Cartier re-released the collection in 2012 (Cincinnati Art Museum). The Trinity traces back to a ring of three interconnecting bands that Louis Cartier presented in 1924 (Lyon & Turnbull).
Luxe Charts follows the Love bracelet in yellow, white and rose gold and in yellow gold with four diamonds, the Juste un Clou bracelet and the Trinity ring.
Rebag’s 2023 Clair Report called Cartier an investment-worthy watch label with 80% value retention and the Tank a timeless favourite (Rebag, 2023). Citing its 2022 report, Rebag gives Cartier bracelets an average retention of 96%, led by Trinity on Cord, Love and Juste un Clou (Rebag). These designs are also widely copied: in 2019 a Florida jeweller was ordered to pay Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels for selling counterfeits that included Love and Juste un Clou pieces (National Jeweler, 2019).
