About Chanel
Gabrielle Chanel opened her first shop in Paris in 1913, followed by another in Deauville, and later moved her couture house to 31 rue Cambon (The Met). She closed the salon in 1939 and returned with a couture collection in 1953. Karl Lagerfeld took over haute couture in 1983 and ready-to-wear in 1984 (The Met). Matthieu Blazy, formerly of Bottega Veneta (Glossy), presented his first Chanel collection for Spring/Summer 2026 (Sotheby’s).
The quilted 2.55 is named after its launch in February 1955, and its diamond quilting was inspired by equestrian wear (V&A). Lagerfeld’s reinterpretation added the leather-woven chain and the Double C turn-lock. In 2021 Chanel renamed this Classic Flap the 11.12, after A01112, the style code of the original Medium (Sotheby’s). Luxe Charts follows the 11.12 in six sizes: Square Mini, Rectangular Mini, Small, Medium, Jumbo and Maxi.
Chanel sits at the top of the pre-owned market. Rebag’s 2024 Clair report placed it among its “unicorns”, brands that keep more than 85% of their value (Fashion Dive), and the 2025 edition listed the Classic Flap among the most searched bag styles (Rebag). The RealReal named Chanel its most searched brand in its 2026 report (FashionUnited). Fashionphile did the same in its 2026 report, which ranks the Double Flap second among its top-shopped bags (Fashionphile).
