The story of the Classic Flap
The bag Chanel now calls the 11.12 descends from the 2.55, which Gabrielle Chanel created in February 1955 and named after that month and year (Marie Claire). The 2.55 brought together quilted leather, an adjustable chain strap and a bag-in-bag construction (Harper’s Bazaar Singapore), closed by a rectangular lock known as the Mademoiselle (Marie Claire). In the 1980s Karl Lagerfeld reworked it, replacing the lock with interlocking Cs and weaving leather through the chain (Harper’s Bazaar Singapore). Sotheby’s and Elle Brasil date this version to 1983 (Sotheby’s; Elle Brasil). In 2021 the house adopted the name 11.12, taken from the style code of the medium size (Sotheby’s). The flap is made in small, medium, jumbo and maxi, with a single-flap mini added in 2010, in lambskin or caviar leather, and each double flap takes more than 180 operations (Sotheby’s).
The quilting should be centred, and the diamonds on the back should line up with the pocket stitching (Madison Avenue Couture).
