The story of the Speedy
The Speedy appeared in 1930 under the name Express, a compact bag drawn by Gaston-Louis Vuitton for a life in motion and made to fold flat (Louis Vuitton). It was conceived as a smaller, more streamlined relative of the Keepall travel bag (Harper’s Bazaar India). The first version was in plain canvas, and Monogram canvas followed in 1931 (Sotheby’s). The body is cut from a single continuous piece of canvas, so the monogram reads upside down on one side (Sotheby’s; Harper’s Bazaar India).
The original measured 30 cm (Sotheby’s). Harper’s Bazaar and Sotheby’s both report that Audrey Hepburn asked in 1965 for a smaller bag, which became the Speedy 25 (Harper’s Bazaar India, Sotheby’s). Sizes 35 and 40, then the Mini HL and the Nano, widened the range, while Damier Ebène, Damier Azur, Monogram Empreinte and Epi leather joined the canvas (Sotheby’s). The Speedy Bandoulière arrived in 2011 with a detachable, adjustable shoulder strap and a two-way zip (Harper’s Bazaar India).
When buying pre-owned, start with the vachetta. On canvas models the handles, trim and piping are untreated natural cowhide that moves from pale beige to honey as it absorbs oils, darkening first on handles and corners (Louis Vuitton). An even tone across all leather parts is the goal (Fashionphile).
