The story of the Lady Dior

The Lady Dior began in 1994 as a design by Gianfranco Ferré and was first known as the Chouchou (Chiswick Auctions; Elle Brasil). In September 1995 Bernadette Chirac, then First Lady of France, gave one to Diana, Princess of Wales, at the opening of the Cézanne exhibition at the Grand Palais in Paris (Marie Claire). Diana was photographed with it by the international press, and in 1996 the house renamed it Lady Dior in her honour and with her approval (Marie Claire). Carla Bruni became the first face of the bag the same year (Marie Claire).

The design is built from house codes. Its cannage stitching recalls the Napoleon III chairs Christian Dior used to welcome his customers at his show in 1947, and charms spelling D.I.O.R. hang from the handle (Marie Claire). Each bag is assembled from 140 pieces (Marie Claire), work that Chiswick Auctions puts at eight hours for seven craftsmen (Chiswick Auctions). It is now made in lambskin and calfskin (Dior).

When buying, read the date code stamped inside (Libas Collective). The leather surface and the cannage stitching deserve close inspection (Libas Collective).
