The story of the Galleria

The Galleria was introduced in 2007 by Miuccia Prada (Wallpaper). It is named after the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan (W Magazine), where the first Prada store opened in 1913 (Prada Group). Wallpaper sees in it nods to vintage medicine bags from the 1950s (Wallpaper), while W Magazine points to 1940s frame bags (W Magazine). It was first offered in Saffiano, a leather W Magazine describes as patented by Mario Prada, and each bag is hand-finished from 83 pieces (W Magazine).

W Magazine calls it an archetypal style of the house, carried by Kate Middleton, Rihanna and Gigi Hadid (W Magazine). For Autumn/Winter 2023 Prada added two-tone and geometric special editions, with a campaign by the artist Alex Da Corte starring Scarlett Johansson (Wallpaper).

Saffiano is hot-pressed and wax-finished, which makes it resistant to water and scratches (Leather & Luxury). It can still scuff, and on two-tone pieces the colour on the raised grain wears first; harsh rubbing can flatten the grain (Handbag Clinic). On the triangle logo, the right leg of the R angles outward with a curved notch, and zips should be engraved with a supplier name such as Lampo, Riri or YKK (1stDibs).
