The story of the Triomphe
The motif came long before the bag. According to Elle, the idea came to founder Céline Vipiana in 1971, when her car broke down on the Place de l’Étoile and she noticed that the chain links around the Arc de Triomphe bore interlocking C symbols (Elle). Celine presents the bag as a tribute to Vipiana (Celine). The bag debuted in 2018 under Hedi Slimane (Elle). Marie Claire describes it as a square leather crossbody flap bag with a large gold Triomphe clasp, inspired by the logo of the 1970s (Marie Claire). Celine counts 89 pieces in the bag (Celine), and a single artisan building one from start to finish can need up to three weeks (Elle). The leather comes from Tuscan tanneries, and Elle describes the tan version as the only one in entirely natural, unfinished calfskin (Elle). The Classique is the most emblematic model of the family (Celine). When buying pre-owned, confirm the size, check the finish of the clasp, and examine the accordion interior and the crossbody strap, the elements Elle singles out in its construction (Elle).
