The story of the Loulou
The Loulou’s identity rests on padded chevron quilting and the YSL logo (Harrods, Selfridges), drawn in 1961 by the artist Adolphe Mouron, known as Cassandre (Fellows). The house became Saint Laurent Paris from spring-summer 2013, a change that kept the YSL logo on its products (FashionNetwork). Fellows, the British auction house, groups it with the Kate and the Envelope as bags that became instant hits for their versatility and recognisability (Fellows). Retailers list it in sizes from the Toy, about 20 cm wide on a detachable, adjustable strap (Bloomingdale’s), to the Medium, about 29 cm wide on a sliding chain strap (Harrods). Suede versions also exist, chevron-stitched and on a chain (Selfridges). On a pre-owned Loulou, look first at the quilting: it should have consistent depth and alignment across the whole bag, and shallow or uneven channels are a warning sign (Fashionica). The interior stamp should read “Saint Laurent Paris Made in Italy”, and the hardware should feel substantial in the hand (Fashionica).
