The story of the Re-Edition 2005
Prada’s black nylon bags first appeared in 1984, made from an industrial nylon used for army tents (Dezeen). The Re-Edition 2005 is inspired by the iconic mini hobo of the mid-2000s and keeps the practical construction of the 2005 original (Marie Claire). Harper’s Bazaar places the Re-Edition 2005 and the Re-Edition 2000 within the revival of Noughties fashion on recent runways (Harper’s Bazaar UK).
It combines a removable chain handle, a detachable woven nylon strap, a removable zipped pouch, Saffiano trim and an enamelled metal triangle (Prada). The body is now Re-Nylon, a regenerated ECONYL yarn made from ocean plastic, fishing nets and textile waste (Prada), which Prada introduced in June 2019 (W Magazine). A later version came in raffia, launched with Prada’s Tropico collection (Marie Claire).
When buying pre-owned, check that the chain, the strap and the pouch are all present, since each detaches (Prada). A genuine Prada nylon bag is fully stitched, never glued, and its logo plaque sits straight; the R of the logo has a curved notch and an outward-angled leg (1stDibs).
