The story of the Alma

The Alma traces its pedigree to an Art Deco original introduced in 1934 (Louis Vuitton). Sotheby’s describes it as the house’s second handbag after the Speedy, inspired by the Art Deco movement in its highly structured, architectural shape (Sotheby’s). Louis Vuitton presents the Alma as an embodiment of Parisian elegance since 1992 (Louis Vuitton).

The structured shape, with rounded top handles, has been made in Monogram and Damier Ebène canvas, Epi leather and Vernis leather (Louis Vuitton). PM, MM and GM were long the usual sizes, with the smaller BB and Nano added more recently (Sotheby’s). The house’s current Alma pages list the Alma BB, the Alma MM, the Nano Alma and an Alma Trunk BB (Louis Vuitton).

When buying pre-owned, turn the bag over. Older Almas have a longer shape and a smooth base without feet; newer ones are rounder, with feet on the base and a clochette (Fashionphile). On canvas models the vachetta handles and trim move from pale beige to honey as they age, darkening first on handles and corners (Louis Vuitton). Since March 2021 many pieces carry a microchip in place of a date code (Lollipuff).
