The story of the Jackie 1961

Gucci introduced the Jackie in 1961 (Wallpaper; Vogue Singapore). It is a curved hobo in a half-moon shape, secured by a piston lock (Tatler Asia; Harper’s Bazaar Malaysia). According to Harper’s Bazaar Malaysia, it was first sold as the Constance and renamed the Jackie in 1964, after Jacqueline Kennedy bought six (Harper’s Bazaar Malaysia).

Later creative directors reworked it. In 1999 Tom Ford replaced the piston lock with a geometric buckle, and about a decade later Frida Giannini introduced the larger, slightly softer New Jackie (Harper’s Bazaar Malaysia). Alessandro Michele brought it back for autumn/winter 2020 as the Jackie 1961, smaller and closer to the original (Wallpaper; Harper’s Bazaar Malaysia). It came in medium, small and mini sizes with a longer removable shoulder strap, in leather or in GG Supreme canvas with the Web stripe (Vogue Singapore).

When buying, note the era, since the closure tells it: a piston lock on the original and the Jackie 1961, a buckle on Ford’s version (Harper’s Bazaar Malaysia). Libas Collective advises comparing measured dimensions rather than size names, because older pieces can differ from current specifications (Libas Collective). Stitching should be even, in a thread that matches the bag, and the hardware heavy and engraved (Luxity). Look for the serial number stamped on the back of the leather tag (1stDibs).
