The story of the Horsebit 1955

The horsebit, a double ring joined by a bar, first appeared on Gucci loafers in 1953 and was used on a handbag for the first time in 1955 (Vogue Singapore; Bustle). 10 Magazine also dates the house’s presentation of the detail to 1955, two years after the loafers (10 Magazine). Alessandro Michele, then creative director, reinterpreted that bag for the Cruise 2020 collection, and the Spring/Summer 2020 runway added further variations (WWD Japan; Tatler Asia).

The shoulder bag is compact and boxy, with a small flap closure (Vogue Singapore). The gold-toned horsebit sits at the centre of the flap, and the strap is adjustable (Selfridges). It is made in calf leather or in GG Supreme canvas (Vogue Singapore). The line has grown to include totes, bucket bags, a duffle, a backpack and belt bags (Vogue Singapore; Bustle).

When buying, look at the leather tag inside. Its back carries a stamped serial number, its front should be cleanly heat-stamped with GUCCI and made in Italy, and a tag stitched to the lining on all four sides is a warning sign (1stDibs). Gucci added QR code tags in 2016 (1stDibs), on a small black fabric loop inside the bag (Luxity). Hardware should be solid metal engraved with GUCCI, and on canvas the GG pattern should run symmetrically (1stDibs).
