The story of the Peekaboo
Silvia Venturini Fendi first showed the Peekaboo at Fendi’s Spring 2009 show in Milan (The Week). She conceived it partly as a reaction to the Baguette, and wanted a bag so classical that only an expert leather goods maker could create it (Fashion Magazine). The name comes from its construction: two halves divided by a rigid central partition, with a front flap that can be pushed down into a U-shape to reveal the partition (The Week). Each side closes with a twist lock in gold or palladium finish, and the bag is assembled around its central core by skilled craftspeople in Fendi’s own ateliers (The Week). By 2018 it came in four sizes, micro at 16 cm, mini at 23 cm, regular at 33 cm and large at 40 cm, in materials including calfskin, nappa, Fendi’s Cuoio Romano, curly sheepskin and ostrich (The Week). Fendi marked its tenth anniversary in 2018 with the #MeAndMyPeekaboo campaign (The Week). When buying pre-owned, measure the width against the size scale, work both twist locks, and check that the central partition still holds its shape, since the bag is built around it (The Week).
