The story of the Saddle

John Galliano introduced the Saddle at Dior in 1999 (W Magazine), in a spring ready-to-wear collection shown in the final season of the 20th century (AnOther). The collection drew on Lauryn Hill, and its campaign images paired saddle bags with trompe l’oeil denim looks (AnOther). The first versions came in blue denim and camel leather, followed by many prints and finishes (i-D). Carrie Bradshaw carried it in Sex and the City (W Magazine; i-D).

Maria Grazia Chiuri brought it back on her autumn/winter 2018 runway (i-D). The current model has a D stirrup strap with a magnetic pull and CD signatures on either side of the top handle, and is made in Italy (Dior).

To tell the two eras apart, The RealReal’s guide advises comparing the Oblique lettering and the serifs of the D (The RealReal). The same guide advises checking for flat-head screws, correctly branded interior zips and a proper serial number, and treats a nylon lining as a warning sign. Box, dust bag and papers do not prove authenticity, though a correctly completed card can help date the bag (The RealReal).
