The story of the 16

Hedi Slimane designed the 16 on the first day of his arrival at Celine (V Magazine). It was his first bag for the brand (V Magazine). It first appeared on Lady Gaga (V Magazine). The name refers to 16 rue Vivienne, the hôtel particulier Colbert de Torcy where Celine is based (Celine). The design revives codes of the house’s 1960s bags: a cropped flap and rounded, belted details (V Magazine). Town & Country traces the trapezoid shape and discreet hardware to the same decade, and notes removable straps and interior pockets (Town & Country). It has also been made in shearling and python (Town & Country). Emma Roberts, Kaia Gerber, Reese Witherspoon and Hailey Bieber followed (V Magazine). Celine announced Slimane’s departure in October 2024 (FashionUnited). The Classique is the most emblematic model of the 16 family (Celine). Celine states that each 16 carries an individual number on the back of its pocket (Celine); on a pre-owned example, check that it is present and legible.
