The story of the Cassette

The Cassette woven-leather flap bag is one of the most enduring new styles launched under Daniel Lee (Harper’s Bazaar Singapore), who arrived at the house in July 2018 (Business of Fashion). Lee’s approach was to supersize the intrecciato weave of the house’s woven bag, a staple since the 1960s (Vogue Hong Kong). The Cassette uses the maxi weave (Selfridges). On the classic version, soft lambskin is bonded to the inside of the brushed calfskin, so the bag is technically unlined (Harper’s Bazaar Singapore). Fashion editors took to its logoless look (Vogue Hong Kong). The Padded Cassette, listed by Vogue under autumn/winter 2019, became the influencers’ version (Vogue Hong Kong). A calf leather Cassette sold by Selfridges has a front flap with a concealed magnetic closure, a suede interior with an internal zip pocket and an adjustable strap with a buckle (Selfridges). When buying pre-owned, first decide which version you are looking at: classic or padded. Bear in mind that the padding takes up much of the volume, so the padded version holds less than it appears to (PurseBlog). Then test the magnetic closure, which PurseBlog finds a little tricky to operate (PurseBlog).
